Joshua Summers is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Nevada who works with two populations that don’t always fit the therapy mold: men who resist asking for help and older adults whose mental health needs get dismissed as “just aging.”
He earned his Master of Social Work from the University of Nevada in 2012 and has spent his career addressing what happens when addiction, chronic illness, and life transitions collide.
Joshua’s first strength is working with men who’ve avoided therapy their entire lives. He doesn’t expect them to open up about feelings in session one or embrace vulnerability before they’re ready. Instead, he uses motivational interviewing that starts where men actually are—often dealing with issues they can’t solve alone. His approach works with male resistance, making therapy accessible for men who thought it wasn’t for them.
His second strength is treating older adults, particularly those facing mental health challenges tied to aging that younger therapists often misunderstand. Late-life addiction is real—alcohol dependence and prescription medication misuse can develop after decades of sobriety, especially when chronic pain, loss of independence, or grief pile up.
Growing up in Chicago with experience in both urban and rural settings taught Joshua that people’s needs shift based on their environment and life stage. He brings this understanding to therapy, using family systems approaches that address relationship patterns across generations and strength-based methods that recognize what clients have survived to get here.
