What is Psychotherapy (Talk Therapy)?

Psychotherapy is a general term that refers to the most common way of addressing mental health concerns, behavioral and personality disorders, and other conditions by talking with a psychiatrist, psychologist, or other qualified, licensed mental health clinician. You may also hear psychotherapy called talk therapy, counseling, psychosocial therapy or, simply, therapy. During psychotherapy, you learn about your conditions or diagnoses as well as how to recognize and regulate changes to your moods, feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. Psychotherapy helps people learn how to take control of their lives and respond to challenging situations appropriately, using healthy coping skills.
