Dear Insight

Insight Therapy Solutions answer:

First and foremost, the emotions you are feeling are valid. Becoming a parent is a significant change from your previous experience and that can be difficult to adjust to and it makes sense that you are struggling to recognize yourself with these changes. It is not uncommon to feel like you aren’t supposed to be having a hard time adjusting to your new baby because it is rarely talked about. The truth is that it is very hard to care for a baby and yourself at the same time. Your health is very important. What may be helpful for you is to develop a supportive relationship with your family, friends, and others in your community who can be present to support yours and the baby’s needs.

To access the care you need, some things that you can do are:

  • Have a check-up with your primary care doctor, the difficulties you are experiencing may be due to an unacknowledged medical issue
  • There are therapists that specialize in postpartum care who you can find through Psychology Today; it is advisable that you talk to someone about the feelings of distress you are experiencing
  • Reach out to parents and families in your community who can offer guidance as you move through this new journey
  • Join a support group for new parents; One popular group to consider is “Postpartum Support International”
  • Use the resources available to you, such as 211 United Way, to have any other needs covered.

It is imperative that you do what you can to take care of yourself first so that your baby has a parent who is readily available to care for them.
