Dear Insight, Could you help me with my marriage

My husband has been irritable and moody for our whole marriage of 20 years. I have never understood why his mood changes so fast and it’s confusing why he gets irritable towards me and our kids. Sometimes, he can’t get out of bed for days where he will call in sick to work because he feels so bad. I convinced him to go to the doctor and the doctor believes he has bipolar disorder. I don’t really know what bipolar disorder is besides what I hear from social media and movies. I want to be able to help my husband through this because now he is really upset with himself. How do I understand what bipolar disorder is and how do I help him?

Insight Therapy Solutions clinician’s answer:

This sounds like a hard situation for you and your husband. Many people experience bipolar disorder, and it is a learning process for people in their lives as well as themselves. Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder where a person will have some high moods where they can be irritable, angry, and have a lot of energy. After the high mood, they could feel really depressed, sad, and have no energy to complete daily activities. There are a few ways you can help him as he learns more about his mental health as well.

  1. Take care of your own emotions and thoughts about what your husband is going through. For you to be able to help him, your mental health is really important.
  2. If you need some support, look in your area for support groups for loved ones of someone with mental health issues. Family therapy is another option to help your family unit understand and support each other as you navigate this new situation.
  3. Ask your husband what challenges he is facing since getting diagnosed to see where he would like help.
  4. Often a primary physician will refer a patient that is going through mental health issues to a therapist and psychiatrist. Both professionals can help get a clear diagnosis for him and help him begin treatment.
