Dear Insight, Ask Our Clinicians Anything You Want to Know

Insight Therapy Solution Answer:

“Losing connection with a loved one can be extremely painful especially when we are unsure as to why the connection has been broken. It sounds like you’ve really tried to consider what occurred which led to your friend not talking to you. I believe there is value in reconsidering your thoughts on how your friend is “doing this to [you] deliberately” and what it means both if, one, something has occurred for this to be a deliberate act, or two, if this is simply a misunderstanding.

The foundation of a healthy relationship is communication; during high conflict, one way to approach communication is with the Dialectical Behavioral Therapy approach of the “DEAR MAN” skill. This skill is intended to help develop effective interpersonal communication and allows the initiator to vocalize their needs through the following steps:

  1. Describe: Tell your friend the subject of what you would like to discuss.
  2. Express your feelings: Tell your friend how you feel.
  3. Assert yourself: Your friend cannot read your mind, so it is important that you assert your expectations of the conversation.
  4. Reinforce: Explain the positive effects of having this conversation.
  5. Mindful: Stay mindful of the intention of this specific conversation.
  6. Appear confident, effective, and competent.
  7. Negotiate: Be open to what the other is saying. Offer and ask for other solutions to the problem.

Using these skills can help someone in having effective conversations with others, but it is also important to remember that you are not entitled to your friend’s time and energy if she does not have the ability to respond to you, for whatever reason, you should respect that. All loss is painful but this may only be temporary.”
